As if we didn’t need another reason to love Google, they made us love them even more. Google is working with the Local Media Association and Local Media Consortium to kick off the “Support Local News” campaign, which will run for six weeks in print and online publications, in thousands of outlets across the US and Canada — including media organizations of color.

These major stories with local ramifications have led to an increase in people reading, watching, and listening to the news—but this uptick doesn’t make up for the demise in advertising revenue. This trend has hit local news particularly hard since most organizations faced financial stress before COVID-19.

This effort will raise awareness of the difficulties facing local news providers across diverse communities, and encourage more advertising, subscriptions, and donations to fund local newsrooms.

The campaign urges businesses and advertisers to invest their market dollars and to subscribe to local papers that support investigative journalism and publishers of color.
